Tagudinian is Outstanding Rice Farmer
The Department of Agriculture - Regional Field Unit 1 conducted a Gawad-Saka
Awarding last December 15, 2005 for the outstanding Farmers of Region 1. And the
municipality of Tagudin is proud and honored to have Mr. Antonio L. Villanueva
as a National Rice Farmer. Mayor Jun, personnel of the Municipal Agriculture's
Office and the rest of the staff of LGU-Tagudin are very supportive of him. To
know more about our National Rice Farmer, he is from Brgy. Lacong, Tagudin,
Ilocos Sur. He has not grown tired of waking up at dawn each day to tend his 2.5
hectares farm for he considers agriculture as his source of fortune and strength
in life. Basically, Mang Anton was Ilocos Sur's 2002 Outstanding Rice Farmer
Adopting Integrated Farming System. For 3 consecutive years now (2003-2005), he
holds the title as Regional Winner for Outstanding Rice Farmer. With diligence,
perseverance and resourcefulness, his farm is now a lush and bountifulness.
Mang Anton's 2.5 farm is utilized wisely. He makes schedules of the cropping
season for his rice crop and integrates rice-fish culture, vegetable planting
and corn farming. He also maintains a 1,500sq. m. fishpond in the area with
around 3,000 tilapia breeders wherein he adopts the broadcasting method in
feeding them. His livestock and poultry enterprises which include raising a
close to a hundred swine, four cattles, 50 meat-typed and 20 meat-typed chicken,
has proven to be a highly profitable venture for Mang Anton.
Being a receptive implementor of innovative rice farming technologies, Mang
Anton observes straight row planting using hybrid rice seedlings and applies
nitrogen top dressing 25 days after transplanting. He also adopts the IPM
teachings and the use of organic fertilizer utilizing animal manure and farm
wastes.
These practices certainly contributed to the increase of Mang Anton's yield thus
giving him a bountiful harvest. In fact, his recent harvest gained him a net
income of P260,962.00 for his crop alone.
And with the additional income he gains from his vegetable, fishery, livestok
and poultry projects, certainly Mang Anton is able to provide more than enough
for his family's needs.
As six of his seven children are now all professionals, Mang Anton considers
this as his greatest reward from agriculture and for that, he would remain to be
a farmer by heart and deed.

Farmers receive hybrid corn seeds
Corn is one one of the major ingredients in the formulation of animal feeds. The
Livestock Industry in our country is booming nowadays to supply the lean meat
requirements of the burgeoning population. The demand of animal feeds in the
local industry increase as the the demand of Hybrid Corn in the market is also
great.
Crop Diversification is one among the 12 Flagship Programs of our beloved Mayor.
His support in the Agriculture sector particularly in providing Hybrid Corn
seeds as a "Plant Now Pay Later Scheme" with no interest is of great help
especially to small farmers. This program will also support GMA Corn Program to
boost the production of yellow corn in the country. This year, more and more
farmers are engaged in corn production thus creating additional employment in
agriculture sector, increasing their income and uplifting the living standard of
our farmers in Tagudin. Just recently, Mayor Jun distributed hybrid corn to the
recipient-farmers with the hope of a bigger and more quality production.

Tagudinians of Canada help renovate OB-Ward
With the concerted effort of Tagudinians of Canada in coordination with Mayor
Jun Verzosa and Dr. Eugene Dauz, Chief of the Southern Ilocos Sur District
Hospital, a new OB-Ward was renovated. Mayor Jun was the guest of honor during
the cutting of the ribbon and blessing of the said ward last November 17, 2005.
In behalf of the whole staff and personnel of SISDH, Dr. Dauz wanted to extend
his deepest gratitude to all Tagudinians of Canada, represented by the
ever-supportive Mayor. The OB-Ward was renovated to give a better service and a
more comfortable stay for mothers who have just delivered and to their
newly-born babies |
 |
OOn November 8, 2004, barely four months after Mayor Jun Verzosa took his oath
of office as mayor of Tagudin, the Official Website of Tagudin, http://www.tagudin.gov.ph/
was launched. Almost overnight this municipality was thrust into the global
stage of the World Wide Web.
More than just a photo journalism showcase, the website has lived up to its
promise of bridging the gap between the administration and its constituents, not
only locally but around the world.
The website is a major source of local news and events happening at home and
abroad. Tagudinians, specially those living and working elsewhere in the world
have long wanted and craved to be informed of news and events from home. The
timely availability of hometown news and information help to ease the pain of
homesickness while encouraging those who have stayed away for a long time to
come back home and be reunited with family and friends.
Sitting in the backdrop of all this is the fact that the tagudin.gov.ph website
promotes transparency in the running of the local government for all to readily
see. It has been a most effective venue for encouraging volunteerism and for
sending out appeals for generosity to aid other people in need. By actively
participating in the life and processes of the website – through email notes,
suggestions, ideas, concerns, guestbook sign ups - many Tagudinians have come to
be involved in the life of the local government. After all, the government is,
for and by the people!
Going forward, Mr. Martin Lasquite,
the web developer, designer and webmaster pledges to provide his most excellent
services to Tagudin by taking tagudin.gov.ph to another level.

Tagudinians observe Piesta Dagiti Minatay
Generally, there are more Roman Catholics in Tagudin than any other religions.
And in a Christian community, November 1 is celebrated as All Saints Day.
This special day for our departed is observed differently this year as compared
to the previous commemorations. The administration of Mayor Jun did everything
to have a more meaningful, peaceful and orderly celebration. Few days before
November 1, members of the Task Force Kaluluwa 2005 have been in the streets and
in the public cemetery to monitor the situation and ensure immediate response
for any untoward incidences that may occur, especially so that greater number of
vehicles pass by the area during this occasion.
The public cemetery was fully-lighted last October 30 to November 1, 2005 to
give a better view and ambience to those who wanted to visit their loved ones
during the night. Municipal Officials and employees, Medical Team from the
Municipal Health Office, Tagudin PNP, Barangay Officials and Police and
Guardians were on-call along the highway and the vicinity of the cemetery ready
for emergencies.
On the evening of 31 October 2005, Religious Christian songs were rendered from
9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. as a new way to pay respect and prayers for our departed
ones. This practice is being observed in many progressive cities and
municipalities in the country.
There was a designated area for flowers, candles, food and beverages' stalls in
the cemetery. With this, there was a better flow for all visitors who came in to
visit their dead. Tricycle drivers also took advantage of the many passengers
going back and forth the area.
Indeed, November 1, 2005 is a truly remarkable day for Tagudinians and all its
visitors.

LGPMS attendees echo package to LGU Officials
The Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) is a management and
development support tool that has the ability to generate information on the
levels of local government capability, service delivery and state of
development. Such information enables local authorities to effectively link
resources to priority areas for improvement or reforms. This was field-tested
for about 9 months in 2004 in 113 cities and municipalities across the country,
primarily to test the performance indicator and web base system. A nationwide
training was conducted on this where the LGU of Tagudin sent participants last
September 12-14, 2005 at the Citystate Tower Hotel in Manila.
The participants, Major Romualdo R. Gapasin, Sr.(Private Secretary II Of Mayor
Jun) and Ma. Elena R. Ringor presented to Mayor Jun, members of the Municipal
Council, Heads of Offices and the Municipal Interior Local Government Officer
said LGPMS package last September 27, 2005.
Henceforth, the Hon. Mayor Jun directed all concerned Heads of Offices to ensure
that all data must be validated before it will be encoded to the LGPMS so that a
more realistic State of Local Government Report (SLGR) will be factually

Rice farmers receive fertilizer
Two hundred twenty (220) Tagudinian farmers received zinc sulfate fertilizers
from the Municipal Agriculture Office as assistance from the Provincial
Agriculture Office to assist rice growers/farmers in the region. Tagudin
received a total of forty (40) bags equivalent to one thousand kilograms (1,000
kgs.) of said fertilizer - sufficient for a 100-hectare land area. Tagudin has
the most number of farmer recipients/beneficiaries from different barangays with
soil exhibiting zinc deficiency - Tampugo, Borono, Las-ud, Lantag, Baracbac,
Tallaoen, Baritao, Lubnac, Malacañang and Bario-an.
Zinc is one of the micro-elements normally present in the soil, which is much
needed by the rice plants (palay). It is especially needed in areas where the
soil is often flooded because such exhibit high pH (acidity) resulting to zinc
deficiency in the soil. Zinc functions to produce Auxin, one of the best known
enzymes that regulate plant growth and help obtain normal growth and high yield
in zinc-deficient soils.
The distribution of zinc sulfate fertilizers was headed by the Local Chief
Executive, Mayor Jun and Municipal Agriculturist Amor Dasalla on August 10, 2005
at the Municipal Agriculture Office.

Eligio gets Hotline aid
Under the auspices of the Ilocos Sur Hotline, a continuing assistance program of
Hon. Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson, another Connie Sabado Eligio, an OFW of
Barangay Ambucao, Santiago, Ilocos Sur, is backed to her hometown. Eligio, 20
years old, flew to Singapore last March 9, 2005 to work as a Domestic Helper in
the hope of uplifting their standardof living.
After only 4 1/2 months, Connie wrote to her sister, Catherine Villalon,
informing her of her plight in Singapore. According to Connie, her lady employer
is very demanding, strict and makes her work from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight. She
only gets 5-6 hours of sleep. She is also the only helper in a three-storey
house who does all the household chores. She serves a family of four (4).
Though her employers do not maltreat her physically, her strength cannot cope up
with the heavy workload so she appealed to her sister to seek assistance from
Santiago Mayor, Hon. Josefino Miranda, who endorsed her case to the Office of
Mayor Jun, Special Action Hotline Officer, on July 21, 2005. After only a week
of contacting Connie's Agency in Manila and in Singapore, a letter was received
by Connie's sister informing her that Connie will already come home.
On July 30, 2005, Connie arrived safely here in the Philippines.
Connie, together with her sister Catherine, came to the Office of Mayor Jun on
August 2, 2005 to personally thank him for his assistance.

Mr. Artemio Cabato (2nd from right), father of Connie Cabato
together with Brgy. Captain of Padaoil, Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur, Milweda Chavez
and husband visit the Office of Mayor Jun to personally thank the Mayor for his
assistance. Also in the photo is the Mayor's Private Secretary, Major Romualdo Gapasin, Sr.
Mayor links 30 Years of pa, daughter gap
Connie Cabato sent a message via e-mail at mayor@tagudin.gov.ph on June 11,
2005, inquiring about a certain ARTEMIO BUQUING CABATO, her long-lost father for
almost thirty (30) years. She came to know about the charitable works and
dedicated public service of the Hon. Roque S. Verzosa, Jr., (Mayor Jun, as he is
fondly called), when she chanced upon the website of Tagudin -
www.tagudin.gov.ph.
Mayor Jun, upon reading Connie's message, immediately tasked his staff to attend
to this case. Assigned staff maintained close communications, through electronic
mail, with Connie, who is currently working in Japan.
Through this communications, it was known that Connie, her father, mother and
brother were separated from each other for already thirty years. She can vaguely
remember details of her childhood since she was only more than a year old when
they were separated. For the assigned staff, this case is like searching for a
needle in a haystack.
What indeed proved to be helpful was the fact that Connie remembered they had
once lived in Ilocos Sur - to be precise, somewhere in Sta. Cruz - Padaoil or
San Jose. Letters of inquiry were immediately sent to the barangay chairpersons
of the said barangays, while at the same time, Connie was informed of these
developments.
After one month and fourteen days, exactly on the birthday of the Mayor, a phone
call was received by his Private Secretary from Barangay Captain MILWEDA CHAVEZ
of Padaoil, Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur, informing the latter that they have already
located Artemio Cabato.
Still hesitant and unsure of whether he is the real father of Connie, interviews
were made with Mr. Cabato. Together with Brgy. Capt. Chavez and some members of
her barangay council, they accompanied Mr. Cabato to the Office of Mayor Jun,
26th of July. Again, inquiries were made to jibe the information given by Connie
to that of Mr. Cabato's. This very same day, an e-mail was sent to Connie
informing her of the good news - that her father and brother have already been
found. Their addresses and contact numbers were likewise given to her.
July 27, 2005 - Mr. Artemio Cabato came to the Office of the Mayor - to again
thank him of bridging the gap between him and his daughter. He said that
yesterday evening (July 26), Connie had contacted him and they talked for
endless hours over the phone. Connie, on this same day, sent an e-mail to Mayor
Jun expressing her sincere and utmost gratitude for locating her father and
brother - she had already talked to both of them yesterday.
Mayor Jun, through his dedicated and sincere public service has indeed bridged
the 30-years gap between father and daughter!
