SAS Ai Update on our Scholars

We are so proud of our SAS Ai scholars. I know it’s early in the school year but still, these youngsters are raring to go and trying their very best. From their meeting other students to their meeting of their new teachers, things in general, they report, are exciting and filled with anticipation.

In particular, two of our scholars won some posts in their school government. This is always a good sign and it shows that even in a class comprised of students we have some semblance of organization and order. Karen Laurente won herself a post as an officer in her class government. Randy Doctor, Jr. was elected Vice President of his class.

Jessa Lastimosa ran for elected office also but drats! she was not picked up in the finals. She deserves congratulations nevertheless for trying. Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise because she is already carrying a full load, what with her responsibilities as an officer in the CAT. You may remember, she is a member of the honor guard that assisted in the installation of the newly elected officials of LGU Tagudin. Sharen Mae Munar continues to pursue her interests in the band as the fourth outside majorette. All great news.

It gives all of us here at SAS Ai a sense of fulfillment and certainly that feeling of inspiration to see our scholars take an active role in the daily school proceedings as well as in their particular scholastic pursuits and responsibilities. We hope for the best for them and we stand ready, willing and able to support them in any way.

Perhaps those among us who also have gone through the wonderful experience of attending school at SAS, graduating and embarking upon our professional pursuits and are now able to sponsor such a scholarship award, will find time to please browse our website SAS Ai for more information. You would be surprised at how doable (emphasis on the DO and ABLE) it really is to help a bright, promising sixth grader who comes from a very needy family here in our beloved hometown of Tagudin, with a full 4-year scholarship. And you know what else? It costs less than $1.29 a day to fund such a scholarship here at SAS. We have made it so easy for you. You can use your credit card and open up a monthly allotment for $38.75. My goodness, you would spend more than that amount for an evening of Chicago fine dining, or perhaps even a Dallas, San Francisco, or Houston fine dining. Just think, you would be giving a bright, promising child a high school education at our Alma Mater SAS.

    Thank you and God bless!

Let me Try again. Who knows my persistence might pay-off. So here we go: This is another request among several that I had made on various websites. Maybe this one is the most effective as it is being read by all Tagudinians all over the world. May I call on all SAS Batch 1959 to please get in touch with me either through this website, by email (romeojsomera@yahoo.com; president@sasaiinc.com), or through the SAS Alumniana International website http://www.sastagudin.wetpaint.com; http://www.sasiinc.org; http://www.sasiinc.com or tel.no. 504-250-5454), or through my cousin, Leonora Lucero Sprenger (leonora.sprenger@shaw.ca). Your inputs, ideas, suggestions and involvement are extremely important in making plans and preparations for our participation in the 100th SAS Anniversary Celebration in 2010 (Wouldn’t it be nice if we would be adjudged the best Batch, or something?). I call on Poldo & Merced Sarmiento and Patricio Dauz, who visit this website frequently to please get hold of me and also spread the word around. Ernesto Laza from Hawaii is all for this thing so let us hear from you. Also let me invite Dr. Mario Lopez, one of our outstanding Batch 59. A special invitation goes to all those who are in/or away from Tagudin. There will be a potluck on 12/28/2010 at the residence of Corazon Lubina Lim, at Del Pilar, Tagudin. It would be from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We are toying around the idea of joining the motorcade but we need any and all Batch 59 inputs on this one. And let me invite all Batch 59 and everybody to join our FREE Community Picnic at Farola Beach on 12/23/2010 and the FREE Community Dance at the Municipal Auditorium on the night of 12/27/2010. We have also some Centennial Souvenir giveaways starting 12/21/2010 (and until supplies last) at SASAI booth at the SAS Campus. Time is getting shorter Guys/Gals. Thank you and God Bless.

An Appeal to All Tagudinian Professionals Residing in the USA

Why donate to charitable causes? First of all because you can and secondly, you believe in the cause. Because you feel that by donating to charity you are able to fulfill an inner desire to be generous to others, specially the needy in our own hometown. Another reason why people donate to charitable causes is that by year’s end they are able to claim their charitable donations as a tax exemption.

For at least 67% of people who donate to charity, tax deductibility of their donation stands out as the compelling reason why they go ahead with their gifts and contributions.

When you donate to SAS Ai as a sponsor of a scholarship award to a bright, deserving, underprivileged Tagudin sixth grader youth, your donation is tax deductible.

We invite you to read all about our SAS Ai organization, meet our SAS Ai scholars and read all about how you can be a scholarship sponsor. This program of sponsoring a scholar is one of the most affordable, most painless, most gratifying and most productive uses of your charitable donations. You can label your scholarship donation in honor of your family, in memory of a loved one, or even in your own name. It is your call.

The side benefits of your sponsorship are multi-faceted. You will be helping a bright, needy student get a high school education at SAS. You will be helping St Augustine’s School in its quest for matriculated enrollment. You will be promoting quality education.

It is a win-win proposition for all parties involved. Why waste your hard-earned money and resources on global charities and humongous outfits? Dedicate your resources to help our bright and promising Tagudin youth who come from needy families. These intelligent students are our future… won’t you sponsor a young and very promising child get a high school education at SAS?

    Thank you.

Developing Good Study Habits (2nd in a series)
We need to remember the basics: hard work, and good old-fashioned stick-to-it-iveness (persistence). To help you move forward, remove roadblocks, and arm you with new skills here are some tips.

No, there is no magic bullet - Use a sensible, balanced approach. Do not gamble your hard earned study time. Spend it wisely—like in an investment.

Gambling vs. investment - In gambling you are taking a big chance. Not even a calculated chance. You are just taking your chances and hoping. Gambling is risking an asset that you can’t afford to (or don’t want to) lose because you’re hoping it will multiply. Investment, on the other hand, is spending an asset for a defined purpose to receive a return that you have good reason to believe you will get.

How to invest in your business as a student - Are you gambling on schemes, or are you investing in information you can use? Ask yourself what you hope to get out of spending time reading an assignment, or doing an extracurricular project. You can get by without studying, you will pass, but you’re investing if you have a realistic outcome you want to see from that time invested. If you find yourself thinking things like, “Maybe this course will work,” you’re gambling.

Because courses don’t work; students do. No one course or product will “do it” for you.

If you don’t know anything about a topic, yet think that getting by nominally will make you a ninja master at it, you’re gambling. If you have a deadline in mind for how fast a course’s content “must work, or else,” you’re gambling. If you’re spending time that you cannot afford to lose on the hope that you’ll quickly learn by cramming, you’re gambling.

Investing in good study habits, on the other hand, is slower-paced and more laid back. An “investment” goal should feel reasonable. It shouldn’t make you overly nervous. And the interesting thing? There are a bunch of ways to invest, and a bunch of desired outcomes. It’s not always about “passing the test”.
    • Some people will invest in study to maintain a good average and to maintain a scholarship grant.
    • Some people will invest in study because they would like to graduate and go on to college.
    • Some people will study with the intention of passing the final exam, but that kind of studying does not address the need to know and understand for the long run.
    • I even heard a story once about a student who wanted to score high in the tests so that he can be a part of the “in” crowd. That kind of thinking is superficial.
Still not sure? Here are my three big rules for the “right” way to invest your student time:

    1. Know your intended outcome or goal - Obviously, if you invest your study time wisely to understand and not to memorize, it’s easier to go in with reasonable expectations of what you’ll get out of it. Understand the course objectives. Listen to the teacher and for the points of emphasis in the lesson.
    2. Study on value, not price - Ask how much having understood this new information will, over time, allow you to succeed. Don’t think of how much time it will take you to study.
    3. Take responsibility - You must have ownership of your own study program. It is up to you to make it work.

SASAi Inc. Secretary - Looking our for you!

    Developing Good Study Habits
One common complaint and excuse pointed out by young students is the lack of time to study. At face value, this could be true. After all, perception is all there is. If a young person is loaded with chores at home, chances are by the time they are done with the chores they are too tired to study. Believe me, this chore-overload situation is not unique to any one student. We all must face the same dilemma at some point. Depending on the current family circumstances there could be field work to be done, livestock to be tended, crops to be watered or harvested, not to mention the daily chores of keeping the good old homestead livable. The situation is a given. There will be chores.

Now then. One solution to this challenge is to manage the chores and to manage your time. A young student may not know about these techniques but certainly they can be learned. Chore management starts with classifying the chores beginning with the most critical down to the least critical. Time management is allocating the most amount of time to the most critical task and working it down to the least critical task. It is okay to re-schedule a non-critical task for the following work day. Strike a compromise with your parents or guardian. If you have to, draw up a contract that is based on your ability to do the tasks you have been assigned to do. Be honest. If the task can be done in half an hour, strive to do it in 25 minutes. Accept all critiques of your work.

Managing your time this way you will find that in the end you will have more time that you can allocate to your studies and to your breaks. Use your breaks productively by resting. Schedule your play time against your work time. Record your progress daily. At the end of the week you will have a list of the chores you have accomplished and the homework you have done. And you will feel much better with yourself.

SAS Alumni International, Inc. Local Liaison Officers - Ma. Victoria D Chua based in Tagudin, and Mr. Alfredo J Somera who is based in San Juan, La Union filed this SASAi Scholarship progress report:

“We will be conducting preliminary interviews of sixth grade Public School students attending the Las-Ud Elementary School on Monday with the help of Board of Trustees member, Leonard Buenavista, who is home on vacation. We will report back to you our findings and our next course of action to follow through.”

Based on this progress report, our Scholarship Committee based there in the Philippines is pursuing, with much vigor, seriousness and intensity, the recruitment of scholarship recipients among the sixth grade students whether attending Public School, SAS, or the Barangay Schools.

Allow me to reiterate and explain what is involved in a SASAi scholarship package offered to poor and needy, bright and promising sixth grade students:

    - a four-year high school scholarship package (from first to fourth year high school at St Augustine School SAS).

    - matriculation and tuition fees, computer lab fees, books, miscellaneous fees, sports fees (if applicable)

    - A pair of Uniforms, a pair of Shoes

    - A small stipend for emergencies (determined on a case per case basis)

Compared to other scholarship offers from various entities, the entire SAS Alumni International, Inc. (SASAi) scholarship package is the most generous we have ever seen. That is the reason why we are looking and searching for the brightest, most academically prepared sixth grade students who come from needy, poor, and indigent families. A famous saying states, “A bright mind is a crime to waste.” We want to help. Do you know of a family that has a child who wants to finish high school badly enough and will work for his or her education? We want to talk with you about our scholarship program.

SASAi Board of Trustees proudly presents its newest member, Mrs. Ma. Victoria Dauz Chua, who is also a member of the SASAi Scholarship Committee based there in Tagudin. She is charged with the heavy task of representing SASAi, Inc. in an official capacity, in establishing contact with the SAS Principal’s office, the Director of Education Tagudin District’s office, the Office of the Mayor, and other entities with which SASAi engages in business transactions.

Mrs. Vicky Chua will be assisted in her representative capacity by Mr. Alfredo J Somera, our SASAi Local Liaison Officer, based in San Juan, La Union. Both Mrs. Vicky D Chua and Mr. Alfredo J Somera will canvass the field of scholarship candidates, using preliminary interviews and conversations including all public school elementary students, SAS students and Barangay school students, and SAS Senior high school students. They will be the source of scholarship application forms, will collect and gather all completed scholarship documentation for processing and shipping to the SASAi headquarters in the US for final scrutiny, analysis and candidate selection.

    SAS Alumni International (SASAi)
would like to encourage the parents of SAS sixth grade students to look into the SASAi scholarship packages being offered for the year 2010. Whether your child is attending SAS 6th grade in the town proper campus or at one of the Barangay schools and you need financial help because you fall under the needy family category we want to talk to you.

Perhaps for us here at SASAi to expect a sixth grade student to have the wherewithal to go searching for financial aid falls outside the realm of realistic expectations. Therefore we fully expect the parents to be part of the thrust and together with their sixth grader child come up with a viable approach and apply for one of these scholarship packages. It takes a little bit of work but every good thing requires some sacrifice.

If you are a parent of a bright, young and promising sixth grade student and you feel that your child would do well with a scholarship package, then we encourage you to go for it. Get on your PC and/or the Internet Cafe and browse our SASAi website and read all about our scholarship offerings. Within these webpages you will find the scholarship application form, the requirements, the sample essays, the sample cover letters and all the answers to your questions. Give it a try and then get a hold of us. You will be glad you did.

On behalf of our entire family I would like to offer sincerest condolences to the family of Manong Romeo C Lorenzana at this time of great loss. I met Manong Romeo, who was then a First Class Petty Officer (HM1, USN), on board the MSTS Barett (US troop ship) while enroute to San Diego, CA for bootcamp training. I was a brand new US Navy recruit, wet behind the ears and a total tinhorn when it came to anything nautical. Manong Romeo, upon learning of my name sought me out and introduced himself to me - a selfless act that was most unusual considering that he was First Class Hospital Corpsman petty officer and I was just a lowly non-rated recruit. He took me under his wing for the duration of the trans-Pacific voyage, sharing with me his own personal Navy experiences and the fact that he knew my late father, Constante P Buenavista, Sr. very well. The time I spent with Manong Romeo at that most impressionable time in my Navy career, although only for a couple of weeks, left me with an excellent impression of the opportunities the US Navy had to offer, and inspired me to apply myself throughout my Navy career. I am eternally grateful for Manong Romeo’s kindness and compassion. He was a good man. He will truly be missed.

    What is a SASAi Scholar?

A SASAi Scholar is a recent 6th grade graduate headed for a high school education at SAS, who is academically prepared, poised and equipped to finish his or her secondary education through pure and personal scholarly effort.

The first and foremost characteristic of a SASAi scholar is personal initiative and smarts, and the inherent need for financial assistance. These SAS scholars possess leadership qualities, a certain brand of seriousness about education and life in general, a positive and enthusiastic attitude that makes it possible for them to be go-getters. They are confident in their God-given talents and abilities, down to earth, and they don’t limit their activities to school matters as they volunteer to participate in community activities and other civic events. Do these attributes describe you? Or do you know of a SAS 6th grader who fits this description?

How does a 6th grade student at SAS (town campus and Barangay schools) become a SASAi scholar? Simple. Fill out an application form (available from SASAi by requesting SASAi Scholarship Committee, c/o Mr. Alfredo J Somera, 155-A National Highway
Urbiztondo, San Juan La Union, Philippines), and read the online webpages on the scholarship program at St Augustine School Alumni International.

Fill out the application completely, write your letters, get your letters of recommendation and references from the proper sources, and submit your package to the same address from which you requested your application form.

After you have submitted your paperwork, just wait for the results. That’s it.

Today in the Internet, there are many forums, there are many groups, there are many websites claiming to be “the premier website” for this or for that. While it is true that these websites may be found in the Internet, what differentiates the SASAi Online Community website from others is the quality of content and the professionalism of the participating members. There are now close to 100 registered members of SASAi online from all over the world. We have SAS alumni from Europe, Canada, UK, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South America, Australia, Asia and of course the United States. Imagine all these former SAS students who are now professionals putting their thinking caps together, discussing issues to bring goodness to all SAS alumni members and that would bring benefits to current students attending SAS. Wouldn’t you want to be part of, to belong, to be a member of this serious group of professionals? Just click SASAi Online Community website here and open the webpage of the real premier online organization of SAS alumni - and click SIGN UP. It’s free.

  • SASAi Secretary said:

How To Sign Up with the SASAi online community - click and read the article on how you may be able to join this up and coming organization of SAS Alumni International. It’s easy, it’s secure, and most importantly it is FREE. In this website you will be able to find out more about the scholarship offerings that SASAi has to offer beginning with the school year 2010. While you are at it, just answer three questions: (1.) Are you in grade 6 at SAS and ready to graduate or have already graduated from grade 6? (2.) Are you planning to attend SAS high school but cannot afford the matriculation fee, tuition, books, uniforms, because your family is poor? (3.) Are you academically skilled, academically prepared with good “B” average or a “3.0″, and are serious about earning your high school diploma? If you answered YES to all 3 questions, we want to talk to you about a scholarship offer. Write by hand your application and give it to your teacher or principal. Explain in your letter why you would want to attend high school at SAS. Why do you want to earn a high school education? What is important to you? What would you like to accomplish? Then ask your teacher or principal to help you get a SASAi scholarship. They will know what to do. Ask for recommendations. Ask for references. Write legibly and neatly. Use white bond paper. Good luck.

    Dear Sir Dante Acosta,

Greetings in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

We, the TNHS family are so pleased to convey our profound gratitude and appreciation for your donation of $1000. We find it so timely because our Special Science Laboratory room needs to be furnished with more tables and materials.

We do assure you that said amount will realize its noble intent of improving science learning through additional laboratory equipment.

We earnestly wish you the best in life. Good Health and God Bless.

    Very truly yours,

I totally agree with certified Tagudinian regarding the usage of this website. I am an avid fan of our mayor and this website coz its the my only connection to what’s going on in my beloved town and just by merely logging on and reading all the updates really makes my day complete.

Speaking of accomplishments, mayor verzosa is an achiever and our beloved town has improved by leaps and bounds thanks to the SB’s and brgy councils too and to all the very good natured townspeople of Tagudin.

I noticed during my vacation back in 2004 that a concrete dike was erected around my former barangay Sawat, thanks to our mayor for that too! unfortunately, most of our farm in Sawat was washed away because of the yearly typhoons. I have to placate my parents and move them elsewhere.wish that coud’ve been done years ago then we don’t have to end up losing our farm the sweat and blood of my parents.

On a higher note tons of cheers for all our officials for the job well done.

Wow! I must say this website is pretty more organize than the previous one! Good job to those who worked on this project. To Mayor Versoza, keep up the good work! you just made me a fan of yours here. :-)

PS. to those who are posting here, maybe we could help make this guestbook more interesting. like comments and suggestions to make our town improve more, or letting our Mayor know how thankful we are regarding his projects and activities that has been implemented. or news that maybe some of our fellow townmates are affected and might be very helpful for them. I know some of us here wants to express their feelings to their parents but I think we may need to just give them a private message using our private email to send them what we feel for them. maybe we could just use this guestbook for more interesting topic. Generally, A guestbook is a logging system that allows visitors to leave a public comment which is related to the website itself.

    hope this will help

Mabuhay Tagudin! More Power to you Mr. Mayor Versoza and God bless!

    Hello to Tagudinians,
I saw and read one of the articles that’s posted here in this site with regards to Glenda Companero. It’s sad to see someone like her to have suffered so much in such a young age. And her fight to survive is continuing on…if she gets the proper medical treatment that she needs she’ll live but if not she’ll perish. With this, life is so hard that her family can not just afford to provide her the necessary medical treatment the Doctor have asked them to do. In this, I personnaly ask everybody browsing this site especially Tagudinians to reach out and offer some help to our needy neighbor back home. Glenda’s father is working at the Tagudin town hall as a laborer. The family lives in Bio. Whoever wishes to help will contact our beloved Mayor for I believe he is also a strong advocate in helping the needy.
Thank you all for your time reading this and hoping that we all get together and extend our help to our fellowmen.
    Thank youall and God Bless!
