Malacañang

BRIEF HISTORY

MALACAÑANG

Hundred of years ago, before World War II started, the town of Tagudin (“Tagud” original name) is well known in the northern part of Luzon especially in the highlands of Montaniosa now known as Mountain Provinces. On those days, the people of Tagudin have good standards of living because of the fertile rice fields and food from the sea. At that time, Tagudin was the center of trade, barter and business especially the products coming from the Mountain like those coming from the mines specifically chromites which is transported to the other countries.  Chromites are shipped from Tagudin to the other countries where Libtong was the shipping port , then called as  “FILMAG”.

Because of this engagement of business here and abroad,  Tiniente del Bario (Brgy. Captain) Leoncio Limon thought of asking the permission from the Municipal Government to make as “Capitollo” a part of government hill which located in Malacañang, through the support of the Municipal Officials headed by Municipal Mayor Jose V. Pepito Bunoan, Sr. These proposal was unluckily disapproved or not carried out in the Provincial Government.

“SUKNOB” was the original name of Malacañang. It was then very wide because its area included the eastern part of the Tagudin Church and Town Plaza (now Rizal and Del Pilar) until the eastern part of Malacañang today.

During the term of Tiniente del Bario Leoncio Limon they failed to make the government hill as “Capitollo”, so they thought of changing the name of the Barangay to Malacañang. Through a Barangay Referendum, the residents decided and elect “Malacañang” as its new name.

The then wide Malacañang became a small barangay when Municipal Councilor Romeo Villanueva requested from the Municipal Government that Poblacion be widened because its area is much smaller than that of Malacañang. This recommendation heed, thus the other parts of Malacanang became Del Pilar and Rizal Districts.
