Lacong

BRIEF HISTORY

The exact founding of Barangay Lacong remains a fiction.  In fact, the story was fabricated from the tales of the early folks who settled in this place during the Spanish Era.  The name “LACONG” was derived from the word “LAKUN”, an Ilocano vernacular that means a group of adult people gathered in one place for the purpose of sharing their own stories and exchanging their personal opinions and ideas about the different occurrences in their place.

One time, a Spanish soldier came across and passed by this group of elders and asked the name of their place, this soldier not knowing that the elders cannot understand much his language.  The elders thinking that the soldier asked what they are doing, answered promptly: “ LAKUN Sir!”  However, the Spanish soldier understood it as “LAKUNG”.

It was then implanted in the mind of the soldier that the name of the place is “LAKUNG” and when he returned to the place, he called it as BARRIO LACONG.

From then on, the place was baptized as BARRIO LACONG until was officially registered as one of the greatest barangays of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, under the Republic Act of the Philippines.

The early occupants of the place were only composed of a few households with a minimal number of family members.  It is composed of the following sitios:

Sitio Almazan – the road along the hillside used as the entrance area of vehicles going to and coming from the eastern part of the Municipality of Tagudin.

Sitio Abkir – the residential area where most of the prominent people developed and decided to reside.  This used to be a semi-forest land and was lately converted as a residential area connecting to the main central place of the barangay.

Sitio Bantay – a hilly part of the barangay where a big percentage of the population resides and where the Barangay Hall is located.

Sitio Laud  - the western part of the Barangay where most commercial establishments are located.

Sitio Centro  - the area where the Barangay Plaza and Barangay Basketball Court is located.  It is the center for Barangay events and activities.

Other parts of Lacong are purely agricultural lands, where farmers practice and apply their acquired skills and knowledge in the field of Agricultural Productivity, where the barangay won in the 2009 Salisal Iladawanna Gaget ti Lumugar Agsaknap Timpuyog (SIGLAT) Search in the Province of Ilocos Sur.
