Garitan
BRIEF HISTORY
Barangay Garitan is one of the 43 Barangays’ comprising the Municipality of Tagudin, Ilocos Sur. This barangay is located at a hilltop four(4) kilometers northeast of the Poblacion of Tagudin. It is bounded on the north by Barangay Lubnac, on the south by Barangay Ranget, on the west by Barangay Bario-an and on the east by fields, narrow plains between hills and mountains with creeks and Suyo, Ilocos Sur.
This community was formerly called barrio TUROD, because it is situated at a hilltop where the residents built their houses. However, according to our forefathers, during the Spanish era, when the Spanish colonizers came to our place, these strangers saw our grandmothers weaving cloth with many different kinds and colors. They asked what they were making but our grandmothers cannot understand the language of these strangers and instead replied: “GARIT-GARIT”. The Spaniards then called the place as such.
Also, during the wars, soldiers made this place (Bario Garitan) as their garages and camps, and during the administration of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, he named all the barrios of the Philippines into Barangays. Thus, this community was called Barangay Garitan, up to the present.
The major occupation of the residents depend largely on farming which is about 90% of the total poluation. The remaining 10% are professionals, local labors and OFW’s/OCW’s.
Barangay Garitan had been given streetlights which is a big help to the residents especially during nighttime. The Barangay Hall and Auditorium is located at the center of the barangay.
Brgy. Garitan has a total of 217 households and a total population of 1,192 as of the Year 2008 census. Majority of these groups are Ilocanos. The major concern of the barangay is a classroom for the DAY CARE CENTER.
