Bario-an

BRIEF HISTORY

The history of Barangay Bario-an is based on the situation of the environment and the culture and traditions of the people residing in the place.

During the early days, people in the area were living in tribes composed of aetas and “itnegs”. These people used wood (“kinungkungan nga kayo).

In 1586, the Spaniards arrived here in the Philippines to take control over the entire country, and in one of their travels, they chanced upon the hilly areas of the place, which were then thickly forested. There was one uniquely different tree, much bigger than the others with reddish leaves. This tree, called “Bario” amazed the Spaniards so much that it delighted them. These “Barrio” trees were amidst big trees called “Der-an”.

Because of the tremendous joy and amazement that these trees brought to the Spaniards, they called the place as “BARIWAN”, combining the names of the two beautiful trees. Eventually the name “BARIWAN” was adopted by the then “Teniente Del Barrios” and was carried to the present changing it to “BARIO-AN”.
